THE FUNDAMENTALS · FREE GUIDE

Know where your hand stands.

From the rarest royal flush to a well-timed high card. Select a hand to see how it works, and what breaks a tie.

STRONGEST HAND

Royal flush

An ace-high straight flush: A-K-Q-J-10, all in the same suit. The highest possible poker hand.

A♠♠A♠K♠♠K♠Q♠♠Q♠J♠♠J♠10♠♠10♠
WHEN TWO PLAYERS HAVE THE SAME CATEGORY

Two royal flushes tie. Suits never break a tie.

THE FIVE-CARD RULE

Seven cards. Your best five.

In Texas Hold’em, make the strongest five-card hand from your two hole cards and five community cards. You can use both, one, or neither of your hole cards.

Can the board play?

Yes. If the best five cards are on the board, players with no improvement share the pot. A hole-card kicker does not help if it is outside your best five.

Does a flush in spades beat hearts?

No. Suits are equal. Compare the five ranks in descending order; if they match, split the pot.

Is an ace always high?

An ace is high except in the five-high straight A-2-3-4-5 (the wheel). It cannot bridge king and two: K-A-2-3-4 is not a straight.
